When we stand together, we are impossible to ignore. Every Wednesday, thousands of union brothers and sisters, across the country put on their red shirts to build a visual wave of solidarity on the shop floor, making our collective solidarity seen directly by management.
The Power Behind the Red Shirt:
This powerful tradition carries deep roots in the labor movement:
- The Origin (1989): The practice began with the Communications Workers of America (CWA), who wore red to honor the memory of Gerry Horgan, a dedicated union brother and CWA Chief Steward who was tragically struck and killed by a scab-driven vehicle on a Bell Atlantic (today known as Verizon) picket line.
- The Legacy: What started as a tribute to a fallen brother quickly sparked a nationwide movement of red picket lines, reminding employers of the real human cost of fighting for workers' rights.
- Modern Solidarity: Today, wearing red on Wednesdays continues to carry a great weight. As corporate interests and corporate-backed politicians continuously attack our collective bargaining rights, wearing red is a silent, powerful reminder that an attack on one is an attack on all.
What You Need to Do:
Plan Ahead by packing a red shirt in your locker or work bag if you struggle to remember.
Wear Your Red Shirt every single Wednesday.
Let's flood the shop floor in red on Wednesdays. Stand up, stand proud, and stand in solidarity!
