Freedom Day: Reflecting on Juneteenth

The Meaning of June 19th

Juneteenth marks a profound turning point in American history. On June 19, 1865—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed—Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to ensure that all enslaved people were finally freed. Today, Juneteenth is not just a celebration of the end of slavery; it is a vital reminder of the resilience, culture, and unyielding spirit of Black Americans. It is a day to honor history while actively looking toward the future.
